There are love stories in The Carrero Connection, and then there are the relationships that were never romantic at all but somehow became every bit as important.
Rachel and Renee are one of those relationships.
I’ve been having far too much fun creating songs inspired by the Carrero characters and their stories, and this time I wanted to step away from the couples and write something for the friendship that has carried Rachel through so much.
So, meet “Best Friends,” Rachel & Renee’s song.

The friendship that became family
When I think about Rachel and Renee, I don’t think of grand declarations or perfect sentimental moments.
I think of showing up.
Fries in a busted blue car. Late-night gas stations. Bad food. Stupid jokes at precisely the moment when laughing probably isn’t appropriate. Knowing when something is wrong without needing an explanation.
That was the feeling I wanted this song to have.
Rachel has spent so much of her life dealing with complicated relationships, complicated family and people who come with conditions attached. Renee is different.
She’s simply there.
She knows Rachel’s silences. She knows when to push, when to joke, when to listen and when Rachel needs someone to metaphorically grab her by the shoulders and remind her who the hell she is.
And Rachel would do exactly the same for her.
That’s why one of my favourite ideas in the song is:
My best friend or family
You and me
Because at some point, the distinction stops mattering.
Renee is Rachel’s family.
Not every Carrero love story needs romance
The Carrero world contains plenty of romance, passion, chaos and men who make extremely questionable decisions. 😂
But I’ve always loved the relationships surrounding those romances too.
The friendships. The siblings. The people who become family by choice rather than blood.
Rachel and Renee have that kind of love.
It isn’t polished or overly sentimental. They can annoy one another. They can laugh through disaster. They can probably turn a perfectly sensible plan into complete chaos given sufficient time and snacks.
But underneath all of it is absolute loyalty.
That’s what “Best Friends” is about.
It’s about having that one person who sees you at your worst and doesn’t suddenly decide you’re too difficult to love.
The person who catches you when you fall — and fully expects you to return the favour.

Bringing Rachel & Renee to life
I’ve also been creating my own visual versions of the Carrero cast recently, and seeing Rachel and Renee together like this made the song feel even more real to me.
These images are how I see them.
That doesn’t mean they have to be how you see them.
One of my favourite things about books is that every reader builds their own version of a character. Your Rachel may look completely different from mine. Your Renee might too. After all these years, some of you probably have versions of the Carrero characters in your heads that no image I make could ever replace.
And I actually love that.
These are simply the faces that fit the people living in my imagination.
If you love Rachel and Renee, this one is for you. 🖤
And when you’ve listened, come back and tell me something because I really want to know:
Which Rachel and Renee moment from the books immediately came into your head while you were listening?
I suspect everyone is going to have a different answer.
And that might be the best part.
