Demo Audio Disclaimer:
This track is a demo created to bring my lyrics to life and explore the sound and direction I’d love to take as part of a band. Vocals and production are not performed by me, and the track is intended for creative and illustrative purposes only.
This one came from thinking about how easily people fall in love with a version of you that isn’t actually real.
It’s something I first became aware of back in my band days, being on stage, doing interviews, putting yourself out there and realising people were forming opinions about you based on a snapshot. A look, a vibe, a moment. Not the full picture.
And it doesn’t really go away.
Even now, as an author and from doing reaction videos, I still see it happen. People connect with something they see and build an idea around it. They decide who you are, what you’re like, what you stand for… and sometimes even what they expect from you.
But that version isn’t you. Not fully.
It’s the curated parts. The bits you choose to share. The version that fits into their ideal.
And the strange thing is, they can genuinely adore that version, even when it’s only a fraction of who you actually are.
This song sits right in that space. That frustration, that disconnect, that awareness of being seen but not really known.
Musically, it leans into that alt rock energy I keep coming back to. A bit angsty, a bit raw, with a steady build that lets the lyrics carry the meaning before opening up.
It’s probably one of the more honest ones I’ve written, and one that comes from a very real place.
Verse 1
I put myself out there
For the world to see
You think that somehow
Means you know all of me
You adore what you don’t know
’Cause I fit your ideal
But the version you created
Was never truly real
Bridge
You think you know me
From what you see
Forget I show only
What I want you to believe
It’s just an image
I’ve got layers, I’ve got depth
You don’t have a clue
Chorus
Idolisation in the worst way
Falling in love with the fake me
I’m not your dress-up doll
fantasy lover, or heroine
You love a version I never chose
Perfect illusion everybody knows
But underneath it there’s a different truth
You don’t know me
Not the way you think you do
Verse 2
The mental gymnastics
You put yourself through
To fashion me like plastic
Like a doll for voodoo
Disregard the human
Twist me to your mould
While the real person
Gets ignored
Bridge
You think you know me
From what you see
Forget I show only
What I want you to believe
It’s just an image
I’ve got layers, I’ve got depth
You don’t have a clue
Chorus
Idolisation in the worst way
Falling in love with the fake me
I’m not your dress-up doll
fantasy lover, or heroine
You love a version I never chose
Perfect illusion everybody knows
But underneath it there’s a different truth
You don’t know me
Not the way you think you do
Final Verse
This isn’t true love
It’s erasure
Trying to shape me
Into your fantasy
I’m not your plaything
I’m me, standing here
Not who you want
Or who you think I should be
And I won’t pretend
Just to make it easy
I won’t become
That fake version of me
Bridge
You think you know me
From what you see
Forget I show only
What I want you to believe
It’s just an image
I’ve got layers, I’ve got depth
You don’t have a clue
Chorus
Idolisation in the worst way
Falling in love with the fake me
I’m not your dress-up doll
fantasy lover, or heroine
You love a version I never chose
Perfect illusion everybody knows
But underneath it there’s a different truth
You don’t know me
Not the way you think you do
Bridge Fade out
You think you know me
From what you see
Forget I show only
What I want you to believe
It’s just an image
I’ve got layers, I’ve got depth
You don’t have a clue
